Mary Marran, MS, OT, MBA, President and COO, Butler Hospital, is only the second female president ever to be appointed to oversee Rhode Island’s premier non-profit, psychiatric hospital, in its 178-year history.

Mary began her decades-long career at Butler Hospital in 1984 as an occupational therapist intern. After seeing her tremendous work ethic and dedication to the patient population, the hospital hired Mary as a full-time occupational therapist (OT) in 1985. She left briefly, but returned to her professional roots in 1992, where she remains today. Over the last thirty years, Mary has diligently worked her way through the ranks, serving in various roles, including overseeing business development, physician contracting and relations, labor relations, site operations, and informatics, before being named president in 2018.

Mary has always stood strongly and proudly in her personal and professional philosophy that early access to behavioral health care greatly improves the overall wellness of the individual, which impacts the health of the community as a whole.

Her vast institutional knowledge of hospital operations, and patient care, has helped Mary successfully lead her staff of over one hundred, to diagnose, treat, and care for patients throughout the region seeking help for substance use disorders, mental health issues, and much more. It is a mission Mary finds herself personally called to.

Under Mary’s guidance, Butler hospital, affiliated with the Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University, the flagship for Brown University's renowned department of psychiatry, an internationally recognized research center, is southeastern New England's only adolescent, adult and senior psychiatric treatment center, providing assessments and treatment for all major psychiatric illnesses and substance abuse.
